A team can look dominant on Sunday and strangely ordinary a week later. Same roster, same coach, same tournament. The difference may be sitting in the patch notes.

Competitive games keep moving. Developers adjust weapons, abilities, maps and characters, sometimes with only a small effect on professional play. Then a bigger patch lands and something teams have practised for months suddenly matters less.

The results still happened. The game that produced them may already be gone.

One nerf can hurt some teams more than others

A small weapon adjustment might take a few practice sessions to absorb. Bigger changes are harder to shrug off.

Whole strategies can go up in smoke If an important character loses an ability or a map leaves the pool. Counter-Strike 2 showed this in July. When Valve replaced Overpass with Cache in the Active Duty map pool, months of Overpass-specific preparation suddenly mattered much less for upcoming matches. Other updates have changed individual weapons or altered how parts of maps play.

That doesn't land evenly across every roster.

One team might have been unusually good on the removed map. Another may already have spent serious practice time on its replacement. A player who built part of a role around one weapon or position can suddenly have fewer chances to use it.

This is where old numbers start getting slippery. A 70 percent win rate on a map is impressive right up until that map isn't being played.

Some teams read the new meta faster

After a large patch, there is often a short stretch where nobody has the answer yet.

Teams test combinations in scrims. Coaches look for interactions that weren't worth much attention a week earlier. Specialist players can become more useful because a hero or role they know well has suddenly moved up the priority list.

Dota 2 is especially good at producing these periods. During DreamLeague Season 26, the event crossed three patches, and several heroes moved noticeably in how often teams picked or contested them.

The interesting bit is how quickly that can change a team's apparent level.

A roster that looked average on the previous patch may understand the new one faster than everyone else. That edge may last only a week or two, but during that week the old form guide looks a little tired.

New characters make the picture even messier

A newly added character, hero or agent comes with very little professional history.

Ranked play can generate mountains of data, but professional teams use characters differently. Coordinated play exposes combinations that ordinary matches often don't. Sometimes developers find out very quickly that something is stronger than expected.

Then a hotfix arrives.

Marvel Rivals had a recent example in July 2026. A major Season 9 update changed hero balance and introduced a revised Team-Up system. An emergency balance hotfix followed the next day as the new environment developed.

Friday's data can describe a slightly different game by Saturday. It sounds obvious, but it's easy to forget when you're staring at a tidy run of previous results.

Bookmakers are working with the same incomplete picture

Esports odds usually draw on familiar information such as team form, roster strength and previous results. The patch belongs in that mix too.

Straight after a large update, some of those inputs become weaker.

A bookmaker may know that a team has beaten another in four of their five meetings. What isn't obvious yet is how either side has adapted to a changed map pool or a major balance patch. Until fresh competitive matches appear, there just isn't much new evidence.

The same problem applies when looking at esports markets on BetJordan Schweiz. Platforms can adjust prices as new information appears, while team news, drafts, recent form and patch-specific results start replacing older evidence.

I've always found the first matches after a major patch more interesting for exactly that reason. Everyone is learning at once, including the people trying to price the match.

The newest live patch may not be the tournament patch

There is another wrinkle. Tournament organisers don't always move professional play onto the newest patch immediately.

VALORANT has used locked tournament versions to keep competition consistent. VCT EMEA Stage 2 in 2025 stayed on Patch 11.0 for the entire tournament, even though tournaments don’t normally have to follow every live-game update immediately. Riot said infrastructure changes were the reason for locking that version.

So seeing a new patch in your game client tells you surprisingly little on its own.

The useful question is which version produced the statistics you're looking at, and which version the next match will actually use.

Old form still matters, just a little differently

A patch doesn't wipe a team's memory clean.

Strong mechanical players are still strong mechanical players. Good communication still travels across versions. A well-coached roster doesn't forget how to prepare because a weapon lost damage or a hero dropped out of favour.

Specific results are where caution starts to matter.

Records tied closely to an old map, character composition or strategy can lose value after a large update. Broader qualities such as teamwork and adaptability may carry more weight until enough matches have been played on the new version.

A small bug fix may barely register. A new map pool, heavy balance pass or emergency hotfix can make last month's spreadsheet look old before anyone has bothered to rename the file.
